{"id":194,"date":"2011-02-02T09:11:15","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T14:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/world.edu\/?post_type=worldedu_posts&#038;p=11917"},"modified":"2016-07-01T17:48:41","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T21:48:41","slug":"banned-book-awareness-library-bill-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bbark.deepforestproductions.com\/column\/2011\/02\/02\/banned-book-awareness-library-bill-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Banned Books Awareness: Library Bill of Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friend over at the Graubner library in Romeo, Michigan just  emailed me a copy of the American Library Association&#8217;s &#8220;Library Bill of  Rights&#8221;.\u00a0 I had emailed him about the Banned Books Awareness and  Reading for Knowledge project and here is part of what he said to me:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In regards to the banned books project you are doing, I like the  idea.\u00a0 I know every year at Graubner we do a nice banned books display  and Kezar did a banned books reading last year as well.\u00a0 The funny thing  about it, is that patrons generally think <em>WE<\/em> banned the  books.\u00a0 Most have no idea how much libraries are against censorship.\u00a0  The ALA Library Bill of Rights (which I&#8217;ve attached) specifically says,  as librarians, it&#8217;s our duty to prevent censorship to allow intellectual  freedom and enlightenment.\u00a0 Why would libraries ever break their own  main stream policy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/deepforestproductions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ALA-bill-of-rights.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ALA bill of rights\" align=\"aligncenter\"  src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/deepforestproductions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ALA-bill-of-rights-179x300.jpg?resize=299%2C424\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Library Bill of Rights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Library Bill of Rights<\/h2>\n<p>The American Library Association affirms that all libraries are  forums for information and ideas, and that the following basic policies  should guide their services.<\/p>\n<p>I. Books and other library resources should be provided for the  interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community  the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the  origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.<\/p>\n<p>II. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all  points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not  be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.<\/p>\n<p>III. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>IV. Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned  with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas.<\/p>\n<p>V. A person\u2019s right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views.<\/p>\n<p>VI. Libraries that make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to  the public they serve should make such facilities available on an  equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of  individuals or groups requesting their use.<\/p>\n<p><em>Adopted June 19, 1939, by the ALA Council; amended October 14,  1944; June 18, 1948; February 2, 1961; June 27, 1967; January 23, 1980;  inclusion of \u201cage\u201d reaffirmed January 23, 1996.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A history of the Library Bill of Rights is found in the latest edition of the <a title=\"Intellectual Freedom Manual\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/aboutala\/offices\/oif\/iftoolkits\/ifmanual\/intellectual.cfm\" target=\"_self\">Intellectual Freedom Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 2011 R.
